Burberry Prorsum

In Designer, F/W 2011, Fashion on February 24, 2011 at 12:07 PM

Christopher Bailey’s Fall collection was based on the early 60′s.

overall the collection worked, but compared to last fall was pretty unremarkable. for the first half of looks were bland, but with a strong mix of coats true to Burberry with matching bags. deep plaid with darker shades, toggled pea coats, contrasting yellow striped belts and chunky boots filled out the looks. and then came the black mink, and the leather, and the cable knit sweaters. there were a couple of standout looks, one particular winter white cable knit sweater worn with black trousers had puffy fur sleeves from shoulder to below the elbow, and also one long, multi-belted fur coat with leather sleeves and poodle- like styled puff sleeves at the cuff.

Matthew Williamson

In Designer, F/W 2011, Fashion on February 24, 2011 at 11:57 AM

Red is the color for fall, evident in many collections but none more so than Matthew Williamsons. leggings with quilted knee pads, hombre fur jackets (seen everywhere, but Williamson’s black and grey version is actually wearable) and red slouchy trousers with a super thin black belt….patchwork geometric patterns, fur, leather, mesh, and AMAZING boots. whys i no one talking more about the boots? Meenal Mistry of style.com says they could have found “chicer” shoes, but please, this was not a chic collection nor was it intended to be.

Topshop Unique

In Designer, F/W 2011, Fashion on February 21, 2011 at 12:27 PM

Topshop is the only chain-store to put on a show during Fashion month. and it is one that is always well received. most pieces will never make it onto the floor, never make it beyond the sample- but buyers, editors and stylists come out for the inspiration. Unique is nothing if not a show.

for fall the Unique designers chose a black and white 101 Dalmations 1930′s theme, beginning the show with a white fur jacket with black spots and a soundtrack of “Cruella De Vil”. models sported puppy dog ear side-buns (more of a Minnie Mouse reference, but at least its still Disney) and some even sported black triangles under their noses.

beneath all of the play on theme were easy to wear separates, the pieces that will make up the stores come fall. Stylist Katie Grand of LOVE magazine obviously had a good time with this show.

Acne

In Designer, F/W 2011, Fashion on February 21, 2011 at 12:18 PM

Acne designer Johnny Johanson’s Fall collection was inspired by those in his design studio, “the people who conjured maximum cool out of minimum budget” as he told Tim Blanks for Style.com.  the color palette of the show was edgier pastels, set atop a pastel war of colors on the walls. wide lapeled vests and blazers, shiny patchwork metallic capri-pants and denim-blue oversized pieces. structurally everything was very Acne, with oversized pieces that played well with the toned down collection.

Theyskens’ Theory

In Designer, F/W 2011, Fashion on February 20, 2011 at 12:15 PM

Olivier Theyskens role as Creative Director at Theory was cemented by his talent, with rave reviews and editorial lust, in his first runway show for the label. his collection for fall gave quick, easy pieces for everyone. black on black on black, with hints of red and grey in long wool jackets, black slinky dresses, chunky cable knit sweaters and sheer black dresses with intricate details.  there were deep comparisons to the collections he presented while at Rochas, yet with a price-point that makes owning the pieces a possibility for many more.

Catherine Malandrino

In Designer, F/W 2011, Fashion on February 20, 2011 at 12:07 PM

Malandrino’s presentation for fall was given in a bright, stark-white loft space with amazing paint crackled columns. it was what fashion week dreams are made of.  her styling was glamorous yet still met the needs of the downtown girl, with thick rimmed glasses and tall boxy hats completing the imagery.

long draped-column dresses, high-waisted, wide-leg rompers and an array of shorts gave every girl pieces to wish for come fall.

Rodarte

In Designer, F/W 2011, Fashion on February 20, 2011 at 12:05 PM

The Mulleavy sisters have been everywhere this year, yet thankfully that did not detour them from pumping out another amazing collection for fall. their collections tell stories and for fall their story was of a wind-whipped beauty in the prairie. the flowing dresses with wind-whipped grass print on the bottom told the story in itself. a tame collection for the label, yet beautiful.

Marc Jacobs

In Designer, F/W 2011, Fashion on February 18, 2011 at 12:04 PM

Marc Jacobs’s fall collection was presented amidst a white vinyl-paneled wall and on top of a reflection-loving mirrored runway.  Jacobs presented a hard, eager collection compared to his last romantic, whimsical collection for Spring 11. the models were severe, stuck under vinyl berets with chin straps constructed by milliner Stephen Jones. vinyl pants, super skinny pencil skirts a’ la the 40′s and shirts styled to be worn backwards rounded out the collection. the rubber wedge snow boots, both edgy cool with a hint of the vinyl feel of the walls would have been perfection about 3 weeks ago. fall collections always have me wanting everything NOW.

be prepared for everything to be in polka dots next year as Jacobs work trickles down through the H&M’s and Forever 21′s.
